What is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy?
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy, (or ESWT), is a new technology using shockwaves to treat chronic, painful conditions of the musculoskeletal system. A shockwave is an intense, but very short energy wave traveling faster than the speed of sound. The word “Extra-corporeal” means “outside the body” and refers to the fact that the shockwaves are generated outside the body by the device.

How Does ESWT Help?
ESWT helps promote new healing and control pain. The treatment produces an inflammatory response. The body responds to this new inflammation by increasing metabolic activity around the site of pain. This stimulates and accelerates the healing process. The microtrauma of the repeated shock wave to the affected area creates neo-vascularization (new blood flow) into the area. Some chronic conditions may require additional treatments once per week, and this depends on how long you have had your condition.
